The Protective Style Routine: Before, During, and After Care
The style is only half the protection, the routine around it is the other half. Braids installed over dirty hair, ignored for ten weeks, and ripped out the night before a new install cost more length than they save. Here's the full cycle done right.
Phase 1: Before the install
- Clarify and deep condition, you're about to seal this hair away for weeks; seal away clean, hydrated hair (full steps in the wash day routine).
- Moisturize and seal generously, leave-in, then oil.
- Assess your edges honestly. If your hairline is already stressed, this is the install to leave the edges out and go looser, review the edge care routine first.
- Set the tension rule with your stylist upfront: snug, never painful. Pain at install is follicle damage in progress.
Phase 2: During the style
- Cleanse your scalp every 1–2 weeks. Diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle along the parts, massage, rinse thoroughly, dry completely (damp roots under braids invite mildew and itch).
- Oil your scalp 2–3× a week. An applicator-tip or nozzle oil reaches between braids easily, this is where Sacred Lengths™ Ayurvedic Hair Oil earns its place in braid season, keeping the scalp nourished while the style does its job.
- Refresh moisture on exposed hair (braid ends, leave-out) with a light mist and seal.
- Nightly: satin bonnet or scarf, and never sleep in a style that's pulling.
- Respect the clock: 6–8 weeks maximum. Past that, buildup, matting at the roots, and shed-hair tangling start canceling the benefits.
Phase 3: Takedown and recovery
- Take it down patiently, rushing the takedown causes more breakage than the entire wear period. Oil helps loosen buildup as you go.
- Finger-detangle the shed hair before water touches it. Weeks of normal shedding is trapped in there; wetting it first turns it into locs.
- Clarify, deep condition, moisturize, seal, the full reset.
- Rest at least a week before the next install. Assess your edges, let your scalp breathe, and enjoy your hair.
Frequently asked questions
How do I wash my scalp in braids without frizz?
Dilute shampoo 1:3 with water in an applicator bottle, apply directly to the scalp along parts, massage gently, rinse with controlled water flow, and blot dry with a t-shirt. Frizz comes from scrubbing the lengths, stay on the scalp.
Why does my hair feel thinner after braids?
Usually it's the released shed hair (weeks' worth at once) plus takedown breakage. If your roots feel thinner install after install, tension is the likelier culprit, check traction alopecia signs.
