What Is Hair Shedding? Normal vs. Excessive Shedding Explained
Seeing a wad of hair in the shower drain after wash day can be alarming, especially if you wear protective styles and wash weekly. But most of what you're seeing is normal, and knowing the difference between shedding and breakage tells you whether to relax or take action.
Why hair sheds
Every follicle cycles through a growth phase (years), a resting phase (months), and a release phase. At any moment, about 10% of your hair is resting and preparing to shed so a new hair can grow in its place. That's the 50–100 hairs a day you lose. If you only detangle once a week, all seven days of normal shed comes out at once, which is why wash day hair loss looks dramatic but usually isn't.
Shedding vs. breakage: the 5-second check
Pick up a lost hair and look at the root end:
- White bulb at one end + full length → shed hair. Normal cycle.
- No bulb, short pieces, both ends blunt or split → breakage. Your hair is snapping mid-strand, which is a moisture, handling, or damage problem you can fix.
When shedding is excessive
A noticeable increase in shed hairs that lasts more than a few weeks can be triggered by childbirth (postpartum shedding), high stress or illness, crash dieting or low iron, thyroid changes, or stopping/starting hormonal birth control. This is called telogen effluvium: a large group of hairs shifts into the resting phase at once and sheds together about 2–3 months after the trigger. It's usually temporary, but if heavy shedding lasts beyond 6 months, or you see bald patches or a receding hairline, see a dermatologist.
What supports normal, healthy shedding
You can't stop shedding (and shouldn't want to), but a healthy scalp gives each new hair its best start. Regular gentle detangling keeps shed hairs from tangling with attached ones and causing knots and breakage, especially important in protective styles. Scalp massage with a nourishing oil supports circulation to the follicles; that's exactly what Sacred Lengths™ Ayurvedic Hair Oil was designed for, with herbs traditionally used to support hair through its growth cycle.
Frequently asked questions
How much shedding is normal per day?
Around 50–100 hairs. If you detangle weekly, expect what looks like a lot more on wash day, it's a week's worth at once.
Does washing hair cause more shedding?
No. Washing releases hairs that had already detached. Skipping washes just delays them.
Why do I shed so much after taking down braids?
Hair sheds daily inside a style but has nowhere to go. A 6-week style holds roughly six weeks of normal shed (2,000+ hairs), which all comes out at takedown.
